Estate Planning for Pet Owners

WHAT WOULD THEY DO WITHOUT YOU?

Shockingly, statistics show that over 2 million domestic animals are euthanized every year in the United States. Of that number 500,000 are killed because their owners became ill, seriously injured or died. Those animals could have been saved if their owners had planned for their safety.

You may not truly understand how MUCH your pets' welfare depends on your actions NOW.  Surprisingly, if you are in an accident or suffer a health crisis  – in your home, car or elsewhere –  EMTs are required by law to call Animal Control.   Once under the authority of Animal Control, your pet will be kenneled for 14 days.  After that, their fate is uncertain.  While you are lying in a hospital, unable to communicate, your pet may be shivering in a cold, dark cage surrounded by strangers.  After 14 days, they can be adopted, shipped to other shelters or, frankly 'put-down'. Even if your relatives are aware that your pet has been incarcerated, they may not have the legal right to reclaim them.

Providing for your pet requires special expertise.  Under the law, your beloved pet is considered 'property' -- just like a table or bookcase -- and they have the same legal rights as a table or a bookcase.  It is illegal to leave money to a bookcase, just as it is illegal to leave money to your pet.  If you want to provide for your beloved animals and make sure they are loved, housed and well cared for in your absence, you have to take the proper legal actions now.

Protect your Pets. -

A message from George
Warshaw, Esq.

I had never considered what would happen to my dog,  Bruiser, if I were  in an accident or became seriously ill. I didn’t realize that EMT’s are required to call ANIMAL CONTROL.  After that, any pet’s fate is uncertain.

HOW CAN YOU PREDICT WHAT YOU CANNOT EXPECT -

ILLNESS OR SERIOUS INJURY?

What if you are in a coma?  Would anyone know about your pets?  If your friends DO find your pets, will they have the legal authority to re-claim them? The harsh truth is a catastrophe can happen to anyone at any time.  Your pets will have no recourse unless YOU take steps to protect them.

We have created a dedicated web site as a planning tool to help you do the right thing for your pets. Provide for their future with or without you.   Visit www.PetTrust-warshawlaw.com and let us help you prepare for the safety and well being of your beloved best friends.
